Parent / Teacher Conferences – November 27 and 28:

This conference is an opportunity for parents/guardians and teachers to discuss your child's current learning. Parents can book appointments with teachers via your MyCBE account.

Access to book appointments with teachers will be available from 06:00 am on Wednesday, November 19 and close for booking at 11:59 pm on Wednesday, November 26.   Conferences will be held in-person, in your child's classroom.

For information on how to book a conference please review instructions HERE

Glass Lunch/Snack Containers:

Please refrain from sending glass containers, jars, or bottles in your child's lunch or snack bags.

While we know glass is a popular choice for food storage, broken glass presents a serious hazard to all students and staff. Accidental drops can easily happen, creating an immediate and dangerous clean-up situation.

Recommended alternatives include:

  • Durable, reusable plastic containers
  • Stainless steel bento boxes or containers
  • Insulated thermoses

Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Retake Day – Dec 9:

If you missed Photo Day there will be retakes happening on December 9.

School Council:

Woodbine School Parent Association – Woodbine School Parent Association

Woodbine School was pleased to share the following School Report with School Council last week. The school shared it’s final school organization for the year, some assessment and learning celebrations from the previous year, and the school goal for 2025-2026. The school also shared some informational updates:

School Report

Woodbine School Council

Nov 20, 2025

School News

Principal Erik Sprong is still on leave. Jeff Hutton is Acting Principal during his absence.

School Organization

As you may remember from June, our original organization had combined grades in Grade 1 and 2. You may also remember us sharing that if resources and registrations allowed we would look at reorganization into straight grades. Enrollment and resources in September allowed the school to hire an additional teacher and reorganize into straight grades across the school. The table below shows the number of classes and number of students in each class as of November 20.

Grade

Number of Classes and Students per Class

2 at 25

3 at 20

3 at 20

2 at 25

3 at 22-23

2 at 26

2 at 24

This decision makes sense for Grade 1 and 2 and ensures the school still has a decent operational budget for the rest of the year to support other needs throughout the school.

Annual Report  and School Development Plan (SDP)

Each year schools are required to report to Alberta Education and the school community results from the previous year and goals for the upcoming year. Woodbine School is now in the second year of a three-year cycle focused on literacy (primarily writing) goal. We are happy to share a snap shot of our data with you today. A complete annual report will be shared by the end of November.

Celebrations from the data (2024-2025 school year)

·         Whole-school gains: At-risk students dropped from 62% to 36% across Grades 2–6 — that’s a 42% reduction.

·         Red to Growth: 62 students who started significantly below moved into at/near grade level. This is a major intervention success story.

·         Grade 4 & Grade 6: Both showed very strong gains (Grade 4 at-risk decreased from 64% → 24%; Grade 6 from 52% → 24%).

·         Indigenous learners: On both Lens and CC3, the percentage of students requiring support dropped to 0% — a remarkable equity bright spot.

·         EAL learners (Lens): Risk cut in half (38% → 19%).

Goal for 2025-2026

While significant growth was noted in spelling this did not translate into growth in overall writing achievement for students. With this in mind the school focus will adjust to overall writing with a focus on process, content, organization and acting on feedback.

·         Need to deepen writing process instruction: Teachers require tools to bridge encoding and composition — from “Can I spell it?” to “Can I express it?”.

Den Groups

In an effort to build connections between students across grades, in meaningful ways, we have organized our school into Den Groups. Each student and staff member is now a Golden Eagle, White Deer, Red Fox or Black Bear all with their own distinctive group cheer. Several times through the year these groups will come together for some celebration, activities and projects.

Let’s Create an Opera

We are back on track with our School Council sponsored Let’s Create an Opera Residency. There were several days of auditions and now a librettist and composer are working with individual classes building towards our school-wide opera.

Alien Inline Skating

We are happy to report that our Alien Inline residency has been rescheduled for February. We were concerned we wouldn’t be able to reschedule this school year.

School Conferences and Report Card

School Conferences are scheduled for November 27- 28 and the online booking system is now open. Due to the labor disruption the first report card, originally scheduled to be available near the end of January, will now be available at the end of February. The adjusted timeline allows for a more complete assessment picture for each student.

IPPs for students are being sent home to parents tomorrow (November 21).
