April 10, 2026

We have been enjoying the warmer weather and the clear school fields! A reminder that we have moved Physical Education outside until the completion of the Opera. Please make sure your child has footwear and clothing that are suitable for outdoor gym activities.

In ELAL, we are working on making connections while we read. This strategy helps students better understand and think more deeply about stories. Students have learned that there are four types of connections: text-to-self, text-to-text, text-to-media, and text-to-world. We have been practicing finding these connections in the stories we read together.

In Math, we are continuing our work with division. After reviewing the basics, students are now learning how to use the standard algorithm (long division). Right now, the focus is on understanding each step in the process and using those steps consistently to solve problems.

In Social Studies, we are learning about the role of the fur trade in Canadian history. Students discovered that there were two main fur trade companies and that they operated in different territories where furs were hunted and traded. On Friday morning, students participated in a trading game where they were assigned the role of either a hunter or a trader. Hunters worked to collect manufactured goods, while traders tried to gather each type of (pretend!) fur. It was a fun activity, and students really enjoyed being outside while exploring this part of Canadian history.

We are also about to begin a new Science project that will combine our waste management unit with our design process unit. Students will have the chance to think creatively and apply their learning in a hands-on way. More information will be shared with students this week.

A quick reminder to please send in your Health and Swimming forms if you have not already done so. Health forms were due today (April 10), and swim forms are due April 20.

Have a great week!

The Grade Four Team

April 9, 2026

All Woodbine students brought home a swim form last week. Please ensure that completed swim forms are returned to your child’s teacher on or before April 20, 2026. Payment for swimming can be made through your MyCBE account.

Our off-site programs rely on the support of parent volunteers to help us meet supervision ratios and make these experiences possible for students. If you are available, please consider signing up using the SignUpGenius link below. Your help is greatly appreciated!

Please note that all volunteers must have a completed and up-to-date CBE volunteer screening on file.

Thank you for helping us make these learning opportunities possible for our students!

Opera Update:

There has been a change to the required outfits for the school opera for Ms. Magee’s and Ms. Caddel’s classes. Students who were previously asked to provide a white shirt will now have white shirts supplied by the school.

Students playing the following roles should provide the listed shirts:

  • Rain and Chinook – white shirt will be provided
  • Welly – light grey shirt
  • Sammy – dark red or dark brown shirt
  • Bo – shirts will be provided by the school

Students in Mr. Pedersen’s class should provide and wear a green or yellow shirt.

Thank you for your support in helping students be prepared for the performance!

April 1, 2026

We hope everyone had a wonderful Spring Break. Students have enjoyed sharing stories about their adventures on their week away from school.

It was wonderful to see families at our Student-Led Conferences on Thursday evening and Friday morning before the break. Students were proud to share their hard work and progress with their families.

Our Woodbine Opera is quickly approaching. Please let us know as soon as possible if your child will be unavailable on the evening of their opera performance. Thank you to families who already shared this information on the purple forms that went home the week before the break.

For the opera performances, students will need to wear a specific colour shirt according to their role:

Caddel & Magee:
Rain and Chinook – white shirt
Welly – light grey shirt
Sammy – dark red or dark brown shirt

Bo - shirts will be provided by the school

Pedersen:
Townspeople – green or yellow shirt

Opera practices have now moved into the gym for the remainder of April. Physical Education will be moving outdoors effective immediately, so please ensure your child has appropriate clothing and footwear for outdoor field games.

In ELAL, we are continuing to build fluency skills. Students are practicing a variety of reading strategies to help them better understand and think about what they read.

In Math, classes are concluding their multiplication units and will soon begin working on division. This will include learning and practicing the standard division algorithm (often called “long division”). Please continue to find opportunities for your child to practice and memorize their math facts (times tables) up to and including 12 × 12.

In Science, we are wrapping up our Energy unit and will begin our Matter unit after the long weekend. In Social Studies, we are beginning to learn about the fur trade.

We hope you have a great week!

Opera:

Our school opera with the Let’s Create an Opera program is really starting to come to life! Earlier in the project, students worked with a librettist to create the story and a composer to write the music. Since then, our music classes have been busy learning and practicing the songs together.

This week we welcomed our stage director, Sara Staples, a Calgary-based opera performer and voice teacher who has performed across North America and enjoys working with young performers. With her guidance, students are now bringing the story to life through staging, movement, and expression—and the excitement has been incredible to see.

Because we will be presenting four performances (two daytime shows for students and two evening shows so families can attend), we have created two casts. Sara has been working with the different casts this week and will continue rehearsals as the production takes shape. It has been wonderful to see the opera suddenly feel like a real performance!

Used Book Collection & Sale

Do you have a “a-lot” of books at home? Our amazing parent volunteers from School Council are collecting gently used books (story books, fact books, graphic novels, and board books) for our upcoming used book sale. Please send any used book donations to the school between March 9–18. There are boxes setup in front of the office for any donations!

Then, during Parent–Teacher Conferences on March 19, families are invited to visit the library and fill a bag of books for $20. Please note that the sale is cash only, so remember to bring real money!

Cultural Fair:

We are excited to invite you to our second annual Cultural Night on the evening of March 19th, taking place during Parent-Teacher Conferences.

This special event celebrates the rich diversity of our Woodbine community and provides families with the opportunity to share their heritage through food, traditional attire, performances, art, music, and cultural displays. It is always a meaningful evening of connection, learning, and celebration for our students and families.

We are currently looking for families who would like to host a cultural booth representing a country or region that is meaningful to them. If you are interested in participating, please email Ms. Rosenbaum by Friday, March 13, 2026. We look forward to coming together to celebrate the vibrant cultures that make our school community so special

March 6, 2026

Dear Families,

Our Student-Led Conferences are coming up on Thursday, March 19 from 5:00–8:00 PM and Friday, March 20 from 8:00 AM–12:00 PM.

These conferences are an opportunity for students to share their learning and reflect on their progress with you. Because students will be leading the conference, it is important that they attend with you.

A few things to know:

  • No booking is required. Please arrive at a time that works for your family.
  • Expect to spend around 15-30 minutes in the classroom.
  • Multiple families may be in the classroom at the same time, as students will be sharing their learning at their own desks or stations.
  • Students will have a guide to help them talk through and share their learning.

We look forward to seeing you and hope you enjoy spending time exploring and celebrating your child’s learning.

Please feel free to reach out to your child's teacher if you have any questions.

March 5, 2026

Hello Grade Four Families!

A big thank you to all our parent volunteers who joined us for our trip to the Hitmen game last week. It was a sea of pink as students from across Calgary, including our Woodbine students, came together to learn about anti-bullying, acceptance, and diversity while enjoying the game. The Calgary Hitmen came out ahead, winning 5–4 against the Moose Jaw Warriors.

With daily jumps in temperature, please ensure your child is dressed appropriately with layers. Please also put names on items such as jackets, hoodies, and mittens so we can return them if they are misplaced. The lost and found is growing at an alarming rate!

In ELAL, we are working on a written recount. Students have the choice to write about either the Hitmen game or their experience with inline skating. They are focusing on organizing their ideas into paragraphs, using descriptive language, and editing their work. We are also working on identifying the main idea of a text and learning how to put research information into our own words.

In math, we are continuing our work with multiplication. Students are learning to multiply by 10, 100, and 1000, as well as multiply a two-digit number by a single-digit number. Please continue to review multiplication facts (times tables) with your child.

In science, we are wrapping up our space unit. Students have researched a constellation and learned about the lunar calendar. This included learning about the Lunar New Year.

In social studies, we continue to explore early Canada.

Looking ahead, students will soon begin a new writing task and will continue building their multiplication skills in math. We will also begin transitioning into our next science unit in the coming weeks.

Have a great week!

Student Led Conferences:

Student Led Conferences are a great time for you to come into the classroom and view your child’s learning and progress. For Grade 1 – 6, you do not need to book in a time, just show up with your child and expect to spend 15 - 30 minutes in their classroom.

Conferences are on Thursday, March 19th, 5 PM to 8 PM and Friday March 20th, 8 AM to 12 PM.

If your child is in Kindergarten, Ms. Harper will be e-mailing a link to sign up for conferences on either Thursday or Friday. This is to ensure physical space for all families to be able to explore their child’s learning in the classroom.

Reminder that this is not the time to discuss concerns about your child with the teacher but an opportunity to celebrate your child’s learning.

Cultural Fair

We are excited to invite you to our second annual Cultural Night on the evening of March 19th, taking place during Student-Led Conferences.

This special event celebrates the rich diversity of our Woodbine community and provides families with the opportunity to share their heritage through food, traditional attire, performances, art, music, and cultural displays. Hello Grade Four Families!

We have been very busy here in Grade 4!

We recently enjoyed a wonderful trip to Fish Creek Park, where we had lunch, explored our sit spots, and played a few nature games. It was a beautiful day to be outdoors—so different from the weather we are experiencing now! With a week of indoor recesses and lunches behind us, we are looking forward to better weather so students can get back outside for fresh air and exercise.

As a reminder, students must come to school prepared for the weather every day, even on days when indoor recess and lunch are anticipated. There may be emergency situations that require the school to evacuate the building, and students need to have appropriate outdoor clothing to remain safe and comfortable in cold conditions.

All Grade 4 classes have now had at least one inline skating session. Students learned how to put on their safety equipment and skates, and practiced important skills such as falling safely and using the heel brake. Please refer to the previously posted schedule for your child’s upcoming skate times.

Next Tuesday, we are heading to the Scotiabank Saddledome to attend the Calgary Hitmen Be Brave hockey game. We will be leaving shortly after the morning bell, so please ensure your child arrives at school on time. Students will need to bring a lunch kit with enough food for the day, as they will not be permitted to purchase food or other items at the game. Each student will be provided with a pink T-shirt to wear. These will be handed out the morning of the game. Please have your child wear a shirt they can easily layer the pink shirt over—long sleeves are a great option to help keep them warm in the arena.

In Math, all classes are working on multiplying larger numbers. We encourage students to continue practicing their multiplication facts up to 12 × 12. Having these facts memorized helps students focus on the process of multiplying bigger numbers with confidence.

In Science, we are continuing our Space unit. Students are learning about constellations, the moon, and the lunar calendar. Please remember that the at-home observation page is due next week.

In Language Arts, we have been learning about Lunar New Year (Chinese New Year). Ask your child which Chinese Zodiac animal they are! We are also reading traditional stories connected to constellations.

In Social Studies, we are learning about early Canadian history, including important treaties and agreements such as the Quebec Act and the Treaty of Versailles.

We hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Warm regards,
The Grade 4 Team

Hello Grade Four Families!

We are back in the swing of things here in Grade Four! Students were very excited to visit the Astrodome, a portable planetarium that came to our school today. Each class spent 55 minutes inside the dome learning just how humongous our universe really is, what kinds of objects can be found in space, and all about constellations. This experience was a fantastic kick-off to our upcoming Space unit in Science.

In ELAL (Literacy), we continue to work on comparison writing. Students have learned that comparison writing follows the structure Both – Same – Different – End. They will practice writing a comparison piece about two items of their choice before applying these skills in Social Studies, where we will compare French and British colonies.

Speaking of Social Studies, we are continuing to explore early Canadian history. Students are learning about the relationships between the French and the English, including treaties that were formed during this time.

In Math, all three classes have either wrapped up or will soon be finishing our geometry unit. Next, we will begin working on multiplying two- and three-digit numbers by a one-digit number (for example, 345 × 3).

Enjoy the warm weather!

Warm regards,
The Grade Four Team

Happy New Year!

We hope you all had a restful and enjoyable winter break. We have jumped right back into learning here in Grade 4 and are off to a great start in 2026!

Happy New Year, 2026

This past Wednesday, we were lucky to have amazing weather for our short trip to Fish Creek Park. Students enjoyed noticing the changes winter has brought to our neighbourhood. Once in the park, we listened to a legend about chickadees and spent time quietly observing nature in our “sit spots.” It was a wonderful opportunity to connect with the outdoors.

English Language Arts (ELA)
In ELA, students are writing recounts about their winter breaks. We are focusing on organizing ideas into clear paragraphs, with one main idea per paragraph. We have been learning that paragraphs are a lot like hamburgers—topic and concluding sentences are the top and bottom buns that hold all the details together!

Hamburger, Lettuce, Tomato, Onion, French Fries, Lunchtime, Barbeque, BBQ

Mathematics
In Math, we are learning about polygons. This includes exploring different types of angles (obtuse, acute, and right), different types of lines (parallel, perpendicular, and intersecting), and classifying triangles (scalene, isosceles, and equilateral).

Science
We have wrapped up our Earth Spheres Science unit by learning about the conservation of natural resources. Students will be completing a test to finish this unit. Our nest unit will be Space.

Social Studies
In Social Studies, we have begun our study of Canadian history, focusing on French and British colonies in Eastern Canada.

Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to another great week of learning ahead!

Pop in with the Principal

On Tuesday, January 20 come anytime between 9:10 am – 10:30 am to have a coffee and say hi to Mr. Molyneux, our new principal.

If you can’t make it, he’ll look forward to seeing you at School Council on Tuesday January 27 at 6 pm.

Warm regards,

The Grade 4 team

Tuesday, December 16th

It is a busy and exciting week in Grade Four as we head toward winter break!

Students are bringing in food donations for our Food Bank Drive. The boxes at the front of the school are quickly filling up, and the den group that collects the most donated items will earn a popcorn movie afternoon. Thank you for your generosity and support.

We are also enjoying some fun spirit days this week:

  • Monday: Twin Day
  • Wednesday: Crocs and Socks Day
  • Friday: Pyjama Day

Our school will also be carolling together on Wednesday and Thursday, which always helps spread some holiday cheer.

In math, we are wrapping up our unit on area with a quiz. Students will demonstrate their understanding of using the formula b × h = A (or l × w = A) to find the area of rectangles and squares. They are also practicing finding a missing variable when the area is known.

Thank you for sending in all the cardboard boxes! In social studies, students are busy creating Early Canadian French Settlements. Each group has been given a historical settlement scenario and is building a model that shows how people adapted to the challenges of their specific location.

Warm regards,
The Grade Four Team

Monday, December 15

Food Drive

As part of Woodbine’s Wellness Curriculum to be kind to others, we are having a Reverse Advent Calendar Food Drive.

Instead of getting a gift each day like a typical advent calendar we are giving a gift of food each day to support the Calgary Food Bank. You are welcome to donate any non-perishable items, however please no glass jars.

We will be competing in Den Groups to see which Den is able to bring the most items. The winning Den will win a popcorn movie afternoon in the new year.

Thank you for your support in teaching the importance of giving and helping others.

Friday, December 5

A quick note from the office:

Woodbine School has a great hill for sliding and sledding. We permit safe sliding, feet first, during recess and lunch recess. However sledding is not permitted at any time when staff are on supervision (morning entry, recess, lunch). All students are aware of this rule. The school and classrooms do not have space to store sleds for after school activities.

Wednesday, December 3rd

Hello Grade 4 Families!

Thank you to all the families who joined us for Parent-Teacher Conferences. If you were unable to attend, please feel free to reach out to your child’s teacher to book a time to connect.

We had a fun-filled outdoor math afternoon today! In groups, students built their own rectangular “snow houses” and then measured the sides using metre sticks and their own feet. Back in the classroom, we’ll be calculating the area of these rectangles using the formula length × width = area. In math, we are also wrapping up our work with addition and subtraction, including questions that involve decimals.

In Social Studies, students have been researching a famous explorer and creating a trading card to showcase what they’ve learned. Next week, we’ll begin exploring early settlements in New France.

In Science, we are studying natural resources and discussing why conservation is so important.

We have now wrapped up our “Little Critter” writing project. Students worked hard to add similes, descriptive words, and meaningful details to their stories. As we continue reading our class novel, Fish in a Tree, we are practicing making inferences and noticing how characters grow and change throughout a story.

As the weather gets colder, please help your child come prepared for time outside. We go outdoors for recess and lunch every day, so warm coats, snow pants, hats, mittens/gloves, and winter boots make a big difference in keeping students comfortable and ready to learn when they come back inside.

Have a wonderful week!

Monday, November 24th

Monday, November 3rd

This year, we will honour Remembrance Day with an in-school gathering and classroom reflections. Given our recent return to school, we want to keep the day meaningful yet manageable for students and staff.

As we reflect on those who served and sacrificed for peace, we will also connect this to our school theme of “We All Belong.” Together, we’ll consider how belonging, kindness, and understanding help build the peaceful communities that so many have fought to protect.

Students will receive a poppy to wear on November 7. Veteran poppy donation boxes are available in the school office for anyone wishing to contribute to the Royal Canadian Legion in support of veterans and their families.

Stay tuned for next week’s Woodbine Weekly, where we’ll share conversation starters and reflection prompts families can use to continue the discussion at home.

Happy Halloween! 🎃

It’s been a fun week in Grade Four! We took time to get back into our classroom routines and expectations after the break. We also finished our read-aloud, The Twits — it definitely had us laughing! Next up, we’ll be starting Fish in a Tree, a wonderful story about embracing our unique strengths.

Next week, we’ll be reflecting on the meaning behind Remembrance Day. We’ll also be attending our school’s Remembrance Day Ceremony.

In Math, we’re wrapping up our unit on place value, including an introduction to decimal basics. We’ll have a short quiz next week before moving on to adding decimals.

With the weather getting chillier, please make sure your child comes dressed in layers so they can stay warm and comfortable during outdoor recess and lunch. If you haven’t already, please also send along a pair of indoor running shoes.

Hello Grade Four Families!

We are looking forward to our Woodbine Meet the Teacher and Community Event which will be on Thursday, September 25 between 5:00 pm and 7:00 pm.  We welcome you to come visit our classrooms and check out what we have been working on so far this year.

Thursday afternoon is our school-wide Terry Fox Run.  We will begin our afternoon with an assembly at 2:00.  Following the assembly, students will head out to the school field to run/walk as far as they can in the given time.  Please ensure that your child is dressed appropriately for the run, including appropriate footwear.

Last Friday, the grade four community took our learning outside.  We spent the morning on the school grounds working on routines and expectations for outdoor learning.  We practiced listening to instructions, using our wolf call to let each other know it is time to gather, and how we appreciate nature and stillness while in our sit spots.  While outside, we heard an Indigenous legend, played a cooperative game, and created sound maps while in our sit spots.  We are hoping to visit Fish Creek Park in the near future to continue our outdoor learning.

In Math, we have continued to work on quick recall of math facts up to 12x12.  Efficiently recalling facts will help students as we move into math concepts such as area and long division.  We are also reviewing place value and learning about decimals and where they fit into the place value chart.

In Science, students are finishing up learning about the scientific method and how this method helps scientists with their research and experiments.  They are sharing their understanding by creating an infographic about the steps of the process in their visual journals.  We will begin exploring Earth systems and how these systems interact in our next science area of study.

In Social Studies, students are familiarizing themselves with the world by completing a world map by identifying the continents and oceans.  This will help us as we begin learning about explorers and Canada.

Please ensure that your child has a set of headphones/earbuds to use during research time on technology.  Students also need a pair of labelled, clean, indoor running shoes to keep at school.

Have a great week!
