The beautiful weather was the perfect backdrop for an inspiring day as our students came together to honor Terry Fox's incredible legacy and celebrate our school community.
A special thank you to our Grade 4 teachers and students for their hard work in planning and organizing the run, including their care for our newest runners in Kindergarten.

ποΈ A Note About School Communication π«
Β
We want to kindly remind families that our schoolβs main mode of communication for weekly events, important updates, and upcoming dates, both from the school and from School Council is through SchoolMessenger. Each Friday, we send out the Woodbine Weekly, which keeps families informed and up to date.
Β
For your convenience, the Woodbine Weekly is also posted on our school website: https://woodbine.cbe.ab.ca/.
Thank you for making the Woodbine Weekly your go-to source for school news and updates!
Update for September 2025
π READING
Teachers are currently completing the Castles and Coltheart reading assessments for Government purposes.
Classes have been working on Read to Self and Read to Someone by building their STAMINA. Ms. Johansen's class is practicing to read focused and silent for 3 minutes without interruptions. They are also working with a peer for 6 minutes where each take turns to read to each other.
Ms. Amanda's class has been enjoying some Chapter books by Kate DiCamillo about a pig named Mercy Watson. They have had some wonderful conversations and listened attentively to each chapter!
Both classes have had the opportunity to do some Reading Responses to stories read aloud in class.

Library exchanges have begun and students will be allowed to exchange books at specific times in the day. Some children are choosing to bring a book home and keep one at school ππΌ
βοΈ WRITING
Both classes have made a routine of writing activities:
Meadering Monday ~ Involves Free Choice or Simple suggestions provided by the teacher such as Weekend News or what is your favourite tv show or movie to watch?
"meandering" meansΒ moving or following a path in a very wavy, curvy, or winding way, like a river.Β It also means to wander around without a specific place to go or a goal, just taking your time and not rushing.Β
Topic Tuesday ~ Discussing and learning new ideas to improve our writing opportunities
Some topics we have been covering are: editing our work with independence, adjectives and Terry Fox writing
Wonder Wednesday ~ Providing students with picture prompts to write what they Wonder and Notice using a T-chart in their Visual Journals. They have been doing such an amazing job that some students have even asked to work on another page!
This or That Thursday ~ We have been posing questions that students need to answer and why they prefer that over the other.
Some questions have been:
Would you rather talk to animals or read minds?
Would you rather live in a world without music or live in a world without books?
Finish/Fun Friday ~ Certain writing activities are expected to be completed in the time provided or else our classes will be asked to finish their work on Fridays. This is a short period of time, at the most 40 minutes but students should have several activities completed from the week before Friday.
Our Motto in Grade 3 is "Work Now or Work Later" π
π’ MATH
We are using the Math UP program where we talk a lot about how everyone learns things in different ways. We may also have several ways to find the same answer. We are stressing the importance with our classes that everybody has different ways to get answers but these also help everyone. We are hoping that students feel comfortable sharing their opinions without judgement from others. Math is about experience, noticing and wondering!
Math UP also allows the class to practice routines, set expectations and working collaboratively. They can experience the importance of using manipulatives with mathematical concepts which helps improve their confidence.
We are currently working on The First 20 Days of Math UP program.
All students in Grade 3 were given a All the Math Facts Page for September. They were allowed 5 minutes for each side which included Addition and Subtraction. These pages have been sent home already for viewing. Classes will be provided another opportunity to practice their Basic Math Facts in both addition and subtraction. We are encouraging families to use these questions as homework practice until the following month.
Everyone is also practicing some simple addition and subtraction games to play when they are completed table tasks.
Teachers are currently using the Government Numeracy assessments in class at this time.
π SOCIAL STUDIES
The grade 3 classes are looking to answer the question:
How can we make our community better for everyone?
Our September focus is to consider the following questions:
What is a community?
What do communities need?
What do communities want?
We have been gathering information about how we feel and what we see during school ground walks.
π₯Ό SCIENCE
The grade 3s are looking into the ideals of Scientific Methods.

We have been practicing many teamwork games, reviewing how to play fair and practicing the routines for gym classes using a whistle or "sit stops". Everyone has been doing a wonderful job practicing our Terry Fox laps for tomorrow's run by running for a continuous 5 to 9 minutes depending on the day. We have learned many games together, ask your child what game they liked to play the best.
