This week in Grade 6:

Welcome back to school, we hope you all had a fantastic Fall Break. What a wonderful short week we have had in grade 6! This week we were visited by our school nurse who shared a presentation on grade 6 immunizations. The first round of immunizations will be on Monday November 17th.

Math:

This week in math, we began our final geometry project demonstrating our understanding of rotation, reflection, and translation through a tessellation art project.

Science:

This week we put the scientific process in motion by doing our own class experiment using gummy bears. Ask your child about it! Next week we will create our own scientific report, update our observations, analyze our data and create conclusions together.

ELA:

In ELA this week and next, we will be exploring paragraph writing and organizing our ideas through writing!

November 3-November 7th:

This week in Grade 6:

Math:

This week in math, we’ve been focusing on translations, rotational symmetry, reflection symmetry, and lines of reflection. Students have been learning how shapes can move, flip, and rotate while still keeping their size and shape the same.

We explored how translations slide a shape to a new position, how rotational symmetry allows a figure to look the same after a turn, and how reflection symmetry creates mirror images across a line of reflection. Students have been identifying these transformations in patterns, designs, and even in nature!

Science:

This week we completed our visual representations of the scientific method. We discussed why the method was important in the scientific process. We learned new vocabulary as well as worked through some exemplar experiments. Students learned about variables (Independent, Dependent, & Controlled) and identified them though using real experimental designs.

Social Studies:

This week in Social Studies, we have been learning about Remembrance Day and its importance. Students have been exploring why we take time to remember those who have served and sacrificed during times of war and peace.

We discussed the meaning behind symbols such as the poppy, read stories and poems that help us reflect, and talked about ways we can show respect and gratitude. Through these lessons and activities, students have gained a deeper understanding of the significance of remembrance, the value of peace, and how history helps us remember and honor the past.

Art:

To go along with our Remembrance Day learning, students created beautiful poppy art using pastels. They experimented with blending and shading techniques to bring their poppies to life, focusing on rich color and texture. The results were stunning and thoughtful — a wonderful way to honor and reflect on the meaning of Remembrance Day through art.

ELA:

In ELA this week, students have been writing thoughtful poems about peace and reflecting on all the luxuries and comforts we are lucky to have in our daily lives. Through their writing, students expressed appreciation for simple things—like safety, friendship, family, and freedom—and explored what peace means to them personally and in the world around them.

Their poems were both heartfelt and creative, reminding us all to pause and be thankful for the many simple joys we enjoy.

This week in Grade 6:

What a short week it was but a wonderful week! We completed the artworks from last week, written reflections and stories that we were engaging in, in class. We had lessons, activities and conversations around Orange shirt day that were inspiring to all. We spent time with our younger buddies, our grade 6s have shown they are great role models and leaders. Our first Fish Creek trip was a great success and we look forward to more opportunities to learn from the land this year.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Orange Shirt Day

Sept. 26th, 2025

This week in Grade 6:

What a great week of learning! It was so wonderful to see so many grade 6 families at our Meet the Teacher and Food Truck event!

In ELA we continued expanding and building upon our writing skills through personal responses in our journals, shared reading and paragraph work.

In math this week we continued to learn about geometry. The topics we explored this week were reflectional symmetry, rotation, congruence, and the essential and non-essential characteristics of symmetry. Students completed fill-in-the-blank notes which we will refer to next week when we practice these concepts.

In science we have been working within the  Scientific Methods Unit. Students are learning about the scientific process and formulating questions that they would like to test. This week students completed their first assignment where they created a visual representation of the scientific process, labelled and defined important vocabulary terms that we use in the process.

In Social Studies we are learning about Democracy and what it means through inquiry. Ask your child about it!

Welcome Back to School!

This week in Grade 6:

We had a fantastic first week of school in Grade 6! The students have been excited, engaged, and eager to learn, which made for a wonderful start to the year.

This week, we spent a lot of time building community—not only within our individual classes but also across the whole Grade 6 group. Through activities like writing introductory letters, group discussions, and a fun STEM project.

We also reviewed our classroom routines and expectations to help everyone feel comfortable and ready to succeed.

We are really impressed with the enthusiasm, kindness, and teamwork the students have shown so far. We are so excited to embark on this grade 6 journey together!
