Class Size Reduction Funding

Dear Families,

We are pleased to inform you that our school has been allocated 1 additional teaching position for the 2026–27 school year through the Government of Alberta’s Class Size Reduction Grant.

This grant funds teaching positions that support improved learning conditions in kindergarten to Grade 9 classrooms.

This funding is specifically intended to help reduce class sizes in core subject areas (English Language Arts/French Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies), with priority given to schools experiencing the greatest class size pressures.

This decision was made using system-wide data that considers:

  • The number of classes exceeding provincial class size benchmarks
  • Projected enrolment and class organization
  • School programming and grade configuration

Our goal is to ensure students benefit from:

  • Increased teacher attention
  • Improved classroom learning environments
  • Greater support for diverse learning needs

We remain committed to supporting strong learning environments for all students and using our resources thoughtfully and strategically.

Teacher Professional Learning and Impact on Student Learning School Development Plan Update

Over the course of this school year, we have seen meaningful growth in students’ understanding of the writing process and their ability to identify the strategies that support them as writers.

In October, many students struggled to identify specific strategies or stages of the writing process that helped them. Approximately 28.6% of students responded with “I don’t know,” “IDK,” or a similar response. By May, this had decreased to 23.9%. While this numerical shift was modest, the depth and quality of student responses improved significantly.

Earlier in the year, student responses tended to focus on general preferences or broad supports such as “typing because it does not make my hand hurt,” “just time to think,” or simply “I just write.” These responses suggested that many students had limited awareness of the intentional processes that strong writers use.

By the spring, students were increasingly able to identify specific writing strategies and stages of the writing process that supported their success. Students referenced brainstorming, planning, graphic organizers, drafting, revising, editing, receiving feedback, and publishing their work. More importantly, students demonstrated stronger metacognitive awareness by explaining why these strategies helped them become stronger writers.

This growth reflects the intentional work happening across our school. Through the generous support of School Council, we were able to invest in high-quality instructional resource from Adrienne Gear that allowed teachers to implement systematic and explicit writing instruction with consistency across classrooms.

Equally important has been the tremendous professional commitment of our staff. Throughout the year, teachers dedicated significant time to collaborative professional learning communities focused on refining instructional practice, examining student learning, and continuously evolving their teaching. This work requires collaboration, professional vulnerability, reflection, and a shared commitment to growth, all with the goal of improving outcomes for students.

We are incredibly proud of the progress our students have made and grateful for the partnership between families, School Council, and staff that continues to strengthen student learning.

Through Casinos, volunteering, and family support, they facilitate meaningful experiences that benefit students across our school. Follow along with our #BecauseOfSchoolCouncil campaign on Instagram (@woodbinecbe) as we highlight just some of the ways their impact is felt.
